PDF Digital Signatures: PKI, X.509 Certificates & ISO 32000-1 Approvals
Understanding the legal and technical distinctions between electronic signatures (e-signatures) and cryptographic digital signatures is essential for contractual agreements, legal filings, and international business transactions.
1. E-Signatures vs Digital Signatures: What Is the Difference?
While often used interchangeably, the two concepts represent vastly different technical standards:
- Electronic Signature (E-Sign): An image of a handwritten wet signature, a typed name in cursive script, or a digital mark stamped onto a page. It signifies legal intent to execute an agreement (under the US ESIGN Act and EU eIDAS regulation) but contains zero mathematical verification of document integrity.
- Cryptographic Digital Signature: A mathematical signature based on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and X.509 certificates. It creates a cryptographic hash of the entire document's byte stream, guaranteeing that the document has not been altered, tampered with, or modified since the exact moment of signing.
2. How the Cryptographic Digest Works
Under ISO 32000-1 Section 12.8, when a cryptographic signature is applied:
- A cryptographic hash digest (typically SHA-256) is computed across the document bytes, excluding the designated signature placeholder range.
- The hash digest is encrypted using the signer's private key, generating the digital signature dictionary.
- The public key certificate (X.509) is embedded within the PDF's signature object.
- When any recipient opens the document in Adobe Acrobat or Chrome, the viewer decrypts the signature using the embedded public key, recalculates the document's current hash, and confirms that both hashes match. If a single comma or digit has been altered, the viewer displays a prominent warning: "Document has been altered or corrupted since it was signed."
3. FreePDFToolz Signing Capabilities
FreePDFToolz provides a dual signing interface: draw your personal handwritten signature with smooth bezier curves on touchscreen or desktop, upload a transparent PNG signature stamp, or generate clean digital signatures with timestamped verification metadata.
